Serena Williams battles into US Open third round by beating Margarita Gasparyan….the untold story

Published

on

Six-time champion Serena Williams progressed to the third round of the US Open with a 6-2 6-4 win over Russian Margarita Gasparyan in New York.

The American, 38, cruised through the opening set but found the world number 117 a tougher proposition in the second under the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof.

The pair broke each other twice before Williams secured a crucial third break in the 10th game to seal victory.

Williams now faces compatriot Sloane Stephens, the 2017 champion.

“She’s such a good player – she plays so smooth,” Williams said of Stephens. “She looks like she’s not taking on energy, then ‘blam’ – there’s five winners. It’s not easy.”

A handful of the 11 unforced errors Gasparyan made in the first set came in her opening service game when she was broken despite having led 40-0.

Williams then broke again with an excellent overhead to go 5-1 up; although she lost her serve to love in the next, the American bounced back in the following game to break for a third time and seal the set in 35 minutes.

Gasparyan improved markedly in the second set at Flushing Meadows despite going a break down to fall 3-1 behind. The 26-year-old, who recovered from three knee operations earlier in her career, twice broke back and had Williams on the ropes again at 4-4, before the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion eventually held her serve.

The American, who last won the US Open in 2014, broke Gasparyan in the next game to avoid potentially being dragged into a third set.

Williams, used to a large support cheering her inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium, said: “I love the crowd here, but this is something cool. I play in the modern era. There’s something more calming about it.”

This was Williams’ 103rd singles win at Flushing Meadows, having passed Chris Evert’s Open era record of 101 earlier in the week. She is seeking to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles title.

“It’s not an easy answer there’s a lot of responsibility, and it scares me a little that’s why I’ve kept playing tennis.”

Venus turned 40 last year. With her age on the wrong side, she has had a patchy form of late. Nevertheless, she still strives to play tennis and retirement is a distant thought.

But Venus does want to have a big family as she grows old. It is something that Venus has thought about and could do when she eventually retires.

“But yes, I want to be surrounded by children when I am older like 70 or 80. And those kids around me making me happy with big family so that’s a nice thought. But definitely some dedication that goes into that.”

Questions on her personal life have been asked a lot ever since her sister Serena Williams married and gave birth to her daughter. Venus also informed her fans about her love life. Venus was asked, “Who’s your boyfriend?”

“No, no boyfriend. Not quite looking for one either.”

Venus is not married: some time ago she separated from her boyfriend Nicholas Hammond after dating him for two years. They were spotted along with the marriage of Venus’ sister Serena Williams to Alexis Ohanian.

Serena and Venus’ sister: “my father is a serial cheater…My mom always argued with him”

Published

Serena and Venus’ sister calls dad a ‘sperm donor’ who abandoned first family — the elder half-sister of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams — is calling out their father, Richard Williams, for abandoning his family and moving on to start a new life with the athletes’ mother, Oracene Price.

Sabrina Williams claims her father was a serial cheater whom she believes has several children scattered across the country, telling The Sun, “I know there’s more siblings, I was told between fifteen and nineteen all over the place, from LA to Louisiana.”

“My mom always argued with my dad about his affairs, he was a serial cheat. I remember that was always the main thing they’d talk about. He is a selfish man, lives only for himself, he just uses his kids to get what he needs,” she added. “He’s not a dad, he was just a sperm donor.”

The 56-year-old explained that Richard, 78, was first married to her mother, Betty Johnson, who had one daughter from a previous relationship, Katrina Jones, 62. The couple then had five children together, including eldest Sabrina, Richard III, 54, Ronner, 53, Reluss, 52, and Reneeka, 50.

When Sabrina was eight, she claims Richard abandoned the family after telling her he was going to the store to buy her a bicycle.

“My mom told me later that he’s never coming back. We went from having everything to nothing. The best dresses, parties, we’d go places. Now there was no new shoes or clothes. I thought I was dad’s favorite and he loved me to death.”

“But once he left, within a year, we became very poor, she continued. “There wasn’t always meals on the table. We went downhill. My mom became stressed out with six kids, trying to provide for us, she became aggressive.”

As Sabrina’s mother turned abusive, she only recalls hearing from her father twice after he moved out, including once when she was 10 and a second time while she was in college.

“In my teens, I was always thinking about suicide,” Sabrina admitted. “I tried it once, it was always with me, and it was about my dad, I had mental health issues. Somehow, I got hold of my dad through a relative and asked for $1,000 to pay some of the college bill at Hope Christian University. He said he’d only give me the money as a loan. That’s when I knew he was an a—hole.”

“After college, I was done with my dad,” she added. “He had never paid any child support and all he wanted to give me was a loan.”

The trainee chaplain didn’t meet Venus, 40, and Serena, 39, until the sisters were in their teens at a Los Angeles theme park.

“I bumped into them by complete chance at Knott’s Berry Farm, a theme park in California, when they were teenagers. I was with my work colleagues and I saw him and thought: ‘Hey, that looks like my dad’.”

“I went over, we exchanged hellos, and we hung out for an hour, that was it. He gave me his number and told me to call him, then guess what? The number he gave me was [out] of order.”

Mother Betty was later diagnosed with cancer, passing away in December 1998.

Naomi Osaka shows off Very Different Look After Winning Australian Open

We rarely see tennis champion Naomi Osaka without her natural curls, but when we do — we’re in for a real treat. Take, for instance, the time she made a gorgeous political statement with her box braids, or when she honored her culture with a colorful headwrap.

Osaka’s hair changes are as fun and intentional as she is, and her latest look fits the bill. The athlete shared an Instagram selfie rocking pink hair styled by Martin-Christopher Harper, with matching graphic liner by pro makeup artist Autumn Moultrie.

“Sakura could never lol,” she captioned her post, referring to the pink-haired character from Japanese manga Naruto. Fans immediately took to Osaka’s comment section in awe of her drastically different look (which is most likely courtesy of a great wig).

“You didn’t have to outdo Sakura like that,” one commenter wrote. “Sakura ain’t even close,” said another. Fellow athlete Usain Bolt chimed in to agree with the masses: “U wore it better @naomiosaka lol,” he said.

Osaka, who is fresh off the heels of another historic win at the Australian Open, is one of many celebrities who have dabbled in bold new hair colors recently.

Hilary Duff revealed cotton-candy blue hair last weekend, while Sarah Hyland also traded in her dark brown strands for a bright copper shade. Osaka’s look might be temporary (for a photoshoot, or maybe just for fun), but we definitely won’t complain if this bubblegum-colored hair makes another appearance in the future.
