Maria Sharapova opens up on her new role of being mother to baby boy

Former five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova is enjoying motherhood as she reveals that becoming a mother has been her most fulfilling role. In mid-July, Sharapova took to Instagram to reveal that she and her fiance Alexander Gilkes welcomed their first child.

Their baby boy was named Theodore. “I was like, yeah, you’ve mentioned all these roles that I think wait in the last nine months during pregnancy and in the last eight weeks of having this little child, that’s been my biggest and fulfilling role,” Sharapova said on the CMO Podcast, per Sportskeeda.

Sharapova on becoming a mother
Sharapova, 35, admits that her perspective has changed since becoming a mother. “Well an entirely new appreciation for parenthood and the feeling of knowing how vulnerable and dependent, you know, this little boy is on us, I think just changes your perspective on life and I know so many parents say that but it’s really, really true,” Sharapova explained.

“And having this caring for someone like, like you do when it’s your own child. Just changes so much of how you look at work. How do you look at your family, how do you take decisions?. I feel like time management has been a big shift for me.”

Nearly three years have passed since Sharapova retired from the game. Sharapova, a former world No. 1, played the final tournament of her career at the 2020 Australian Open. Sharapova didn’t make a run in her final tournament as she lost to Donna Vekic in the Australian Open first round.

Since retiring, Sharapova has been focused on business and most recently she has welcomed her first child. Retirement life has definitely been going well so far for Sharapova, who is now enjoying her new role of being a mother to a baby boy.
