‘He’s Not Winning It, He’s in Trouble’: Former British No. 1 Believes Roger Federer Can Still Win a Grand Slam

Former World No. 1 Roger Federer has been off the tennis tour since Wimbledon 2021. The Swiss Maestro, since his exit owing to problems with his knee, got it operated on in 2021.

Thus, he has been recovering ever since and has not provided a definite timeline for his return to the court. In fact, Federer underwent two surgeries on his knee in 2020, before he returned to the tour in 2021.

Sadly, things did not go well for the 20-time Grand Slam champion and he had to take more time off. Now, former World No. 4 Greg Rusedski opines that Federer still has a shot at adding to his Grand Slam tally.

Greg Rusedski thinks Roger Federer can still win Wimbledon
A month ago, Roger Federer had said that he was “in a really good place” in terms of his knee’s recovery process. Thus, it could very well mean that the Maestro is aiming for a return to the tour in time for the grass-court season.

Of course, Federer, over the years, has become synonymous with Wimbledon, and that is where everyone expects to see him return. Moreover, former World No. 4 Greg Rusedski echoes the sentiment. “We’d love to see Roger at Wimbledon,” Rusedski said. However, it’s a “wait and see” situation, according to him.

Then, Rusedski reminded how Federer has always stated that he is “not going to play when (he doesn’t) feel like (he) can win slams anymore”. Thus, if Federer returns to Wimbledon this year, Rusedski is almost certain that he would compete to win the trophy and nothing less.

“Fingers crossed in April,” Rusedski stated, talking about seeing Roger Federer at Wimbledon and the Laver Cup. Moreover, he also stated that it would surely be pleasing to watch the Maestro play on any level.

However, when it comes to winning another major, the only one Rusedski believes “he still has a shot” at is Wimbledon, even if he’s not completely healthy, but only “semi-healthy”.

Rusedski talks about Federer’s last Wimbledon run
Greg Rusedski mentioned that for his 2021 Wimbledon run, Roger Federer “wasn’t healthy”. Federer made it to the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam but lost to Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets.

Rusedski, speaking to the stature of Federer, stated how most players would be “pretty psyched about” making it to the quarter-final of a major. However, “for Roger, if he’s not winning it, he’s in trouble,” Greg stated.

Wimbledon 2021 was the last time Roger Federer played on the tour. He got past players like Adrian Mannarino, Cameron Norrie, and Lorenzo Sonego on his way to the quarter-finals.

Sadly, Polish tennis star Hubert Hurkacz defeated him 6-3, 7-6, 6-0 in straight sets, prompting Federer to take time off for his knee yet again.
