Intresting – Tennis world erupts over Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal news

The tennis world has erupted after the announcement both Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal aim to play at Laver Cup in 2022, which could see the pair team up in doubles for the last time.

Nadal returned from a six-month lay-off to complete one of his greatest ever comebacks to win the Australian Open and a record 21 grand slam titles.

The 35-year-old Spaniard missed Wimbledon, the Olympics and the US Open as a result of a foot injury that prompted him to consider calling time on his career.

However, Nadal prevailed in what has been described as the ‘greatest comeback’ in the Open Era to defeat Daniil Medvedev 2-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in the final.

Unfortunately, Federer was unable to return from injury in time to play at the Australian Open.

The 20-time grand slam champion hasn’t played since Wimbledon last July and had a third knee operation in August.

After two procedures on the knee in 2020, Federer made a short-lived return in 2021 before re-injuring it.

But despite recently turning 40, the Swiss champion is adamant that he wants to return to professional tennis.

And the Swiss maestro has confirmed his intention to play at the Laver Cup this September, along with Nadal.

Tennis fans remember the iconic scenes when ‘Fedal’ teamed up to play doubles together at the first edition of the Laver Cup.

And with both players in the twilight of their career, fans couldn’t be more excited for one last chance to see the two legends on the same side of the court.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back into competition later this year and Laver Cup is very much part of my plan,” Federer said.

“It’s no secret that I love the event and I’m super excited to be returning to The O2 and to London, one of the greatest cities in the world.”

Both players will represent Team Europe as they take on Team World in a bid to retain the trophy for a fifth successive time under the watchful eye of captain Bjorn Borg.

“It doesn’t get much better than being able to select Rafa and Roger for the Laver Cup in London,” Borg said.

“What Rafa just achieved at the Australian Open last weekend was incredible. He embodies the spirit of our game and we are so lucky to have him and Roger as role models for our sport. Two great champions, one incredible city and an iconic venue – it is going to be truly momentous.”

And Nadal said the chance of taking the court with his friend maybe one last time during their professional careers would be a special experience.

“Roger has been a huge part of my career, a big rival and also a true friend,” Nadal said.

“To be part of Team Europe together is great and if we’re able to possibly share the court one more time as a doubles pairing then this would be a truly special experience for us both at this stage in our careers.”
