Naomi Osaka’s Boyfriend, Cordae, Didn’t Know Who She Was When They Met

His first tennis match was cheering her on at the U.S. Open.

Naomi Osaka is many things: Four-time tennis Grand Slam champion, Olympian, and outspoken advocate for social justice. The 24-year-old tennis superstar is also one half of the “coolest young couple on the planet,” according to GQ Magazine.

Osaka has been dating Cordae, a rapper previously known as YBN Cordae, for about two years. According to Osaka, he’s been an essential part of her journey.

While the couple is quite private, Osaka wrote a heartfelt message to Cordae after his show of support during the 2020 U.S. Open. “He

stopped everything he was doing because I FaceTimed him a couple days earlier and said I was feeling sad and lonely in the bubble,” she wrote on Instagram, per People. “I later found out that he hopped on a plane shortly after that call and then quarantined himself for a couple days in a hotel to see me.”

And in a rare red carpet appearance, as a show of support, Cordae walked alongside Osaka at the 2021 Met Gala. The tennis star is a co-chair of this year’s event, alongside Billie Eilish, Timothée Chalamet, and Amanda Gorman. She wore a Louis Vuitton gown inspired by her Haitian and Japanese ancestry.

In a new Netflix documentary series, Osaka opened up about her family, childhood, and rapid ascent to fame, beginning with her 2018 victory against Serena Williams at the U.S. Open—and Cordae made an appearance. Here’s what to know about her relationship with the rapper.

Cordae is a Grammy-nominated rapper.
Cordae, 24, was born Cordae Amari Dunston in Raleigh, North Carolina. Growing up, his family moved around frequently—he told Complex he attended seven different elementary schools—but he came of age in Maryland.

His ascent to a rap star was fast. Picture this: In 2017, Cordae was attending Towson University to study communications and worked at T.G.I. Friday’s. He dropped out in 2018, telling the L.A. Times that he had only gone to college to please his mother. He moved to L.A. to be part of the YBN Collective and continue his rap career (he had released his first mix tape when he was 15 under the name Entendre). In May of 2018, he had his first viral song, a remix of Eminem’s 1999 single, “My Name Is.”

Cordae’s debut studio album, The Lost Boy, came out in the summer of 2020 to acclaim. Speaking to Highsnobiety, Cordae said the album was informed by the “journey” he went through. “I am the embodiment of struggle, I am a product of struggle too,” Cordae said. “I represent what a lost boy is and the idea of finding your path. I like the idea that a rose can grow from concrete and that’s what I want this music to embody.”

Later, Cordae posted a video of himself crying when he learned he earned Grammy nominations in the categories of Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song. He later told the Associated Press that he wasn’t necessarily surprised by the nominations—he’d been manifesting this moment. His phone background at the time was a photoshopped image of him holding a Grammy.

He’s currently working on another album. Cordae describes his music as emotional. “I make that s*** that touches your soul, that the average human being can relate to,” he told Pigeons & Planes in May 2018.

Osaka introduced Cordae to tennis.
Cordae and Osaka first met during during a Clippers game in 2019. Speaking to Ebro in the Morning, Cordae confessed he wasn’t familiar with her at the time. “I didn’t even know who she was. When you think about tennis, I know Serena Williams. That’s all I can speak on tennis,” he said.

His first-ever tennis game was was in 2019, when he watched Osaka play at the U.S. Open. Speaking to GQ, Cordae said he felt “out of place” at the match. “My elementary school, middle school, high school was 99.9 percent Black. Kids who look like me,” Cordae said. “It just felt really weird for me being in that space. That was my first tennis match ever.”

Cordae said their relationship “feeds the brain.”
Cordae and Osaka had different upbringings. Osaka was born in Japan and grew up pursuing a career in tennis in Florida and New York. Cordae, on the other hand, moved around the United States. Cordae says he’s “seen all aspects of American life,” telling the L.A. Times, “I’ve been through college, and I lived in a trailer park for five years. I’ve lived in the trenches of Maryland, and I’ve lived in the suburbs.”

Now, they use their journeys to teach each other. “She has a very worldly perspective,” Cordae told GQ. “My perspective has always been being a young Black man in America. But she thinks more worldly. I’ve only been traveling the world the last two years.”

Cordae said he and Osaka love recommending books and movies to each other. “Just always feeding the brain,” he said.

They were “grateful” for the time spent together in quarantine.
Osaka and Cordae didn’t get on each other’s nerves during the quarantine period in 2020. Speaking to GQ, Osaka said the period actually strengthened their relationship.

“I’m very grateful for the time that we’ve spent during quarantine. Because we both move around so much, I’m not sure when we would have had a couple of months just to enjoy each other’s time and get to know each other better,” Osaka said. She added they watched a lot of movies.

The couple is private on purpose.
Poke around on Osaka and Cordae’s Instagram pages, and you won’t see much PDA. That’s deliberate. “We don’t really post intimate moments, because I feel as though they’re sacred. A relationship is really a sacred thing,” Cordae explained to GQ. “Once you let outside influences get into it, it becomes less sacred.”

That said, when they do interact, it’s with love. Osaka posted a few behind-the-scenes photos from the 2021 ESPYs, including one with Cordae. He commented, “The highest level

And yes, Cordae writes songs about Osaka.
Cordae dedicated a few verses to Osaka on his EP, Just Until…, released in 2021. Case in point? “My girl would forfeit a tennis match to meet my grandmama / Man, she truly a keeper,” he sang in “Dream in Color.” The song “Thanksgiving” is about bringing her home to meet his family during the holidays.

Speaking to GQ, Osaka revealed Cordae played her music before anyone else. “I had to do a lot of pleases. ‘Please, sir, can I just please listen to your song?’ Eventually, he let me listen to his music, which I feel really grateful and honored about, to be honest. He’s a perfectionist, and I think that’s sort of what I am too. So maybe that’s why we get along,” Osaka said.

Cordae added, “She’s musically inclined, though. She has a good ear. I don’t really trust too many people’s ear like that. You get what I’m saying? She has a widespread ear. And that’s the way she thinks as well: worldwide.”

Kate Middleton’s anger at Prince William over his lifestyle: ‘Making me look bad’

KATE MIDDLETON was left furious with Prince William after he was pictured dancing on a podium alongside another woman just days after another encounter in a nightclub.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have announced Kate will host a charity Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey next week. Taking place on December 8, the event will be televised in the lead up to Christmas. Kate and William’s increasingly integral role within the Royal Family has also shown the strength of their relationship. Earlier this year, the Cambridges celebrated 10 years of marriage. They didn’t reach the milestone without challenging moments, however, as highlighted by a 2007 report.

It claimed that William had been seen dancing on a podium in Bournemouth, attracting the attention of another woman.

This came just days after newspaper reports claimed William was seen sharing an embrace with a woman while on a “boys’ night out” in Boujis, London.

The newspaper quoted a friend of Kate’s who said the Duchess sent a warning to William.

The friend said: “Kate told William that he was making her look bad.

“She has coped for years with girls flinging themselves at her boyfriend and, for a while, she found it humorous and even flattering.

“But after his recent behaviour she gave him an ultimatum and told him that every time he behaved like that in public he was cheapening her image as well as his own.

“She told him she wasn’t prepared to be treated like a doormat and that his carefree behaviour was affecting her image.

“She gave him quite a pasting. In the past, she had always let go of things like that, but this really bothered her.”

A family friend of Kate’s added: “Kate rose above all the rumours and just laughed them off, but something recently snapped in her.

“She was irritated when she read about his flirting in Bournemouth and she wasn’t best pleased to hear about the blonde he ended up with on the dance floor at Boujis.”

Kate and William endured a tough year in 2007 when they briefly split.

Reports from April 2007 also claim that William broke up with Kate via a phone call that she received while at work.

Naughty Boy’s unfortunate Meghan Markle error: ‘This is the future’

NAUGHTY BOY made a bold prediction about Meghan Markle’s place in the Royal Family, which sadly turned out to be far from the truth.

Naughty Boy, the music producer who is best known for hits such as Runnin’ and La La La, is already getting stuck into bushtucker trials as he stars in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! He has also clashed with fellow campmate Kadeena Cox over cooking duties as the show begins in dramatic fashion. Naughty boy, whose real name is Shahid Khan, is used to keeping company with big stars, including members of the Royal Family. In February 2018, Naughty Boy performed for royalty as Prince Charles and Camilla hosted a gala dinner for the British Asian Trust.

He admitted he was “petrified” ahead of a performance for the royal couple at Buckingham Palace.

Naughty Boy said: “I was really petrified initially because there’s so much powerful energy here, but it felt right that I should be doing this.”

The DJ said: “I think this is part of the future. The whole culture is shifting to accepting just everything. For the Royal Family to spearhead that ‒ I think that’s amazing.”

Meghan’s life in the Royal Family was far from idyllic, however, as two years of regular criticism and tensions within the family culminated in the Sussexes leaving royal duties behind in 2020.

Meghan and Prince Harry later spoke about their life in the Royal Family with Oprah Winfrey.

Will Andy Murray retire from tennis?

After producing a 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 comeback against Oscar Otte on Wednesday, a match played under the centre court lights with a sense of nostalgia, Andy Murray then bowed out of Wimbledon with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Denis Shapovalov on Friday.

That loss once again raised the matter of his retirement. Murray almost retired once, but fought back from undergoing surgeries in 2018 and in 2019, operations that mean he now plays with a metal hip

t had seemed that the Scot was set to retire in 2019, so much so that a farewell video was prepared with messages from tennis legends and the other members of what had been ‘The Big Four’. That came as a shock to the three-time Grand Slam champion as he had never officially stated he’d hang up his racket. But, it did appear that the end was near.

His return at Wimbledon 2021
Murray was able to fight back from his injury nightmare, playing well in doubles and even winning another ATP men’s singles title at the 2019 European Open, his first since March of 2017.

Through a wildcard, he was able to enter Wimbledon in 2021 and spoke ahead of the tournament about how excited he was.

“A few years ago, I thought I wasn’t going to be able to play there ever again,” he told GQ.

“So, even though the last 18 months have been difficult from a tennis perspective, I’ve still been able to play a little bit.

“Unfortunately, I haven’t been at the level that I want as consistently as I wanted to, because of the injuries, but then again before the hip operation I also had come to terms with the fact that I might never play tennis again. So it’s been hard.

“But I’m still excited to be out there and getting the chance to compete in events such as Wimbledon.”

Murray hints at retirement
After bowing out of Wimbledon in the third round, though, Murray was more pessimistic when asked about his future.

“There is a part of me that feels a bit like I have put in so much work the last three months and, you know, ultimately I didn’t play how I would want and expect,” he said after his loss to Shapovalov.

“So, it’s like, is it worth it?”
