Stefanos Tsitsipas takes Rafael Nadal’s No. 3 spot and celebrates with Mouratoglou

Published

on

Rafael Nadal entered the current season with an almost 4000 points advantage over Stefanos Tsitsipas. Things have changed a lot in the past seven months, and the Greek will replace the Spaniard in the top-3 on Monday, becoming the 13th active player in that group.

Stefanos will compete in Toronto next week as a top-3 player for the first time, celebrating the achievement with Patrick Mouratoglou, who often works with the young Greek at his Academy in France. Tsitsipas has won 4660 points in 2021, and Nadal could not follow that pace, winning two titles but failing to reach a Major final.

The Spaniard will leave the top-3 for the first time since June 2017, losing ground a bit since the pandemic’s start last year and winning three titles in the past 12 months. Nadal suffered a back injury in Adelaide in January while preparing for the Australian Open, and he still reached the quarter-final in Melbourne.

The 2009 champion scored four victories in straight sets to hit the quarters without spending too much time on the court, playing well and having a massive chance to extend the winning streak and enter the semis. Instead of that, Stefanos Tsitsipas ousted Nadal in thrilling five sets, delivering marvelous performance behind the initial shot from set number three and prevailing in the decisive moments to score a 3-6, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, 7-5 triumph in four hours and five minutes!

Shifting into a higher gear with his back pushed against the wall, Stefanos controlled his service games’ pace in the third set and grabbed a tie break 7-4 for a massive boost. Nadal made some loose smash errors in the breaker, and they would cost him dearly, as he couldn’t regain momentum in the rest of the clash, hanging in but not doing enough to cross the finish line first.

The pressure was on Rafa in sets four and five, and he could not endure it after losing the drive, getting broken once in each to hit the exit door.

Stefanos Tsitsipas will pass Rafael Nadal on the ATP ranking list tomorrow.
Nadal lost the pace a bit with his groundstrokes as the match went on and struggled more and more on the return to put Stefanos in the driving seat.

Simultaneously, Tsitsipas threw everything he had on his opponent, delivering one good hold after another and completing his most remarkable career victory to advance into the second Australian Open semi-final in three years.

Nadal stayed away from the court until April, and Tsitsipas used that time to earn many wins and reduce the deficit to the Spaniard. Rafa lost in the Monte Carlo quarter-final to Andrey Rublev while Stefanos went all the way, gathering momentum and setting another clash versus Nadal in the Barcelona final.

Rafa won that one after three hours and 38 minutes of a grueling battle and a match point saved, playing better than the Greek in Madrid and Rome to regain composure. Tsitsipas punched again at Roland Garros, reaching the first Major final and earning points, as Nadal lost in the semis.

Stefanos wasted two sets to love advantage against Novak to stay empty-handed, and he lost ground after that to experience early losses at Wimbledon, Hamburg and the Tokyo Olympics. On the other hand, the Spaniard skipped almost two months after Roland Garros due to a foot injury, returning to the court this week in Washington and losing in the third round to propel Stefanos in front of him in the rankings and leave the top-3 after over four years.

ABC gave more details on Maria Francisca Perello, Rafael Nadal’s longtime girlfriend and future wife. Maria studied Administration and Direction of companies in the Balearic Islands University. She did not make people notice she was Nadal’s girlfriend.

Then she started working in the department of Communication in Palma de Mallorca. Then she worked in London for Mapfre, which is connected to Nadal. She is currently the director of social integration of the Rafa Nadal Foundation which is based in Barcelona and ran by Nadal’s mother Ana Maria Parera.

In 2013 the couple bought a €4 million worth chalet where they live. Maria understands the sacrifices that her future husband does to keep competing at the highest level. They started dating each other in 2005. She rarely speaks about their relationship.

In 2011, she told John Carlin, writer of Rafa: My Story book, explaining why Nadal often goes to the tournaments being alone: “Travelling around the world would not be good for me and him either. If I followed him everywhere, I think we could stop getting well each other.”

A close source to the couple told ABC: “She gave him his room to relax and not feel tense. When one like Nadal goes through so much pressure he needs to be calm.” In an interview to TODAY Serena Williams was asked her thoughts on her sister Venus as an auntie.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner praised what she considers her best friend. “She’s great. None of us grew up! We’re all just a bunch of kids having fun”, said Serena who became mother of a daughter called Olympia in September 2017.

I feel like things should have changed more,” said Serena, who added: “I feel like the older (Olympia) gets, the more I go back to being how I was. I don’t know if that’s normal, but that (pre-baby life) started coming back for me.”
