Naomi Osaka and Roger Federer had a rather unique experience at the current Roland Garros since both decided not to play the tournament anymore for different reasons. None of them was dealing with a specific injury.
Naomi Osaka withdrew from the Roland Garros after being caught in a spat with the slams that threatened to suspend her because she kept on refusing to attend press conferences. Indeed, Naomi didn’t want to face the press citing preservation of mental health.
Roger Federer also decided to retire from the French Open. The Swiss sensation reached the major’s fourth round after winning a tough match against Dominik Koepfer 7-65 6-73 7-64 7-5. However, soon after the match, the 20-time slam champion made it clear that he was not sure if he would play against Matteo Berrettini in the fourth round because he had to preserve his body ahead of the grass-court season.
Some fans were quite upset about the difference in the behavior and treatment of the 2 champions from the Roland Garros organization, especially after the tournament director Guy Forget released the following statement:
“The Roland Garros tournament is sorry about the withdrawal of Roger Federer, who put up an incredible fight last night. We were all delighted to see Roger back in Paris, where he played three high-level matches. We wish him all the best for the rest of the season.”
The inequity of how the tournament reacted to the Federer & Osaka scenarios is staggering. If the roles were reversed – would they have threatened Federer with expulsion from future grand slams? I think not.

While not the same scenarios, the contrast in reaction of #Federer withdrawing vs. #Osaka withdrawing is interesting to note. #RolandGarros @Steve_Weissman @jon_wertheim @Chanda_Rubin

Osaka: Hi guys I’d love to play but feel like I need to take a step away from press conferences.#RolandGarros: FINES! THREAT OF EXPULSION!
Federer: Hi guys I’m dipping out because I’m scared my knee won’t get me to Wimbledon.#RolandGarros: It’s okay Roger baby we love you.

Federer can listen to his body and do what’s best (use RG as a warm up for grass) but naomi can’t listen to her body and do what’s best (take a break from press for this tournament)

This looks like double standards by French open. Federer withdraws no controversy yet Naomi Osaka threatened with sanctions to preserve her mental health. Roger and Naomi concerns both

THROWBACK : WATCH When Serena Williams Called Maria Sharapova B*TCH
Serena Williams vs Maria Sharapova is one of the most heated rivalries in the women’s game. Their match-ups have always been the most compelling ones. The viewership of their battles has been sky-rocketing compared to other rivalries on the WTA Tour.
There is some kind of friction existing between the two of them and the Grand Slam champions have never really got along with each other. In Sharapova’s autobiography, Unstoppable its mentioned their relationship has some kind of ‘intense antagonism.’
Post her two consecutive defeats, Williams has been ruthless against Sharapova on all the surfaces. Sharapova must have stunned the world by defeating Williams at Wimbledon 2004 finals and WTA Championships, but she lost 20 consecutive matches against the American veteran tennis player.
The heated-rivalry of women’s track has witnessed some bitter moments. One of them took place on Rod Laver Arena during the Australian Open 2007 finals. Serena was steamrolling over Maria in the first set with a 5-0 lead. Sharapova released her serve and later Williams charged onto the net.
The Russian wasn’t holding back, even she sprinted to the net, and in a blink of an eye, she smashed the ball on Serena Williams. A frustrated Serena moved back to the baseline for the next reception and simultaneously uttered the ‘B’ word.
Later, Williams thrashed the Russian ace 6-1, 6-2 and clinched her third Australian Open title.
“I will never lose to that little bitch again” – Serena Williams
According to Maria Sharapova’s autobiography, Unstoppable, Serena was super-annoyed after losing to the lanky Russian at Wimbledon 2004. The battle could be termed as Williams, the physical Goliath vs Sharapova, like David.
The American just couldn’t accept her Wimbledon final defeat to a 17-year-old skinny girl. Out of disappointment, Serena once used the ‘B’ word for Maria.
“Not long after the tournament, I heard that Serena told a friend — who then told me — ‘I will never lose to that little bitch again,’” Sharapova depicted in her book.

18-year-old Emma Raducanu emerged as the winner of the US Open 2021. She created history in New York after becoming the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam. The British star thrashed Leylah Fernandez in straight sets in the finals to clinch the title.
After Emma Raducanu’s victory at the US Open 2021, an interesting fact came into picture. The British player won the Grand Slam at the age of 18 years and 303 days. Intriguingly, at the same age, 9-time Grand Slam champion, Monica Seles had already won seven majors.

Emma Raducanu certainly has the potential of achieving what Monica Seles accomplished on tour. However, she has to play consistently well for that. Will she be able to end the year on a high and finish among the top-20 WTA players?
