The 20-time Major champion Roger Federer was among the players to beat in 2019, battling against much younger opponents and finishing the season inside the top-3 behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Staying injury-free for three seasons, the Swiss was a Major and Masters 1000 contender, hoping for a similar run in 2020.
Roger reached the Australian Open semi-final in January last year before experiencing a knee injury that required surgery in February. Feeling the pain, Roger underwent another procedure in May and stayed away from the practice court until the season’s closing stages, missing the rest of 2020 and focusing on 2021.
Working hard in Dubai and at home in Switzerland, Roger made a long-awaited return in March in Doha, beating Daniel Evans in three tight sets before squandering a match point versus Nikoloz Basilashvili. Taking more time off the court, Federer will return to action at the ATP 250 Geneva event on Tuesday, facing Pablo Andujar in the second round.
In the pre-event press conference, Roger said that he can’t think about matching Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal at the moment, staying focused on his game and hoping to get back at 100% by the grass season.
Roger Federer spoke about his expectations ahead of the upcoming events.
“I need to play ten matches to give you a better answer about my level.
Things have been going well in practice. When you come back from an injury, you’re in a different place than everyone else. I am excited about the comeback and won’t be focused on being at the same level as Rafa Nadal or Novak Djokovic right now.
I was happy that the knee didn’t feel any different from hard to clay, and I expect the same in the switch from clay to grass. I’ve never had any major issues going between the surfaces, but with an injury and not having played as long as I have, the concerns are always there.
So far, the clay has been good for me, and I hope it will be good for me for the grass. I haven’t watched that much, but every time I have watched, I’ve been impressed. I’ve been excited to find out how I’ll fare.
Going to Doha, I was particularly worried about the level and the first set I played with Daniel Evans; I won it, and I surprised myself a little. Now we’re on clay; I’m more focused on the clay than my opponent. Once I get healthy and matches under my belt, that will increase my confidence.
I think then I’ll be a part of the top tier. If you want to be in the top level, you need to play 50, 80 or 100 matches per season, which gets more challenging as you get older. One thing is for sure, that the generation of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev have all gotten better with more experience.
Dominic Thiem won a Major in the meantime, and Rafa and Novak are still where they are. You would think that the game has improved again. It will be an extra challenge to find that level, but it was never going to be simple, whether I was out for three months or almost a year and a half,” Roger Federer said.
‘Not going to happen’: Golf fans shattered over Tiger Woods news
Golf fans have been left saddened after it emerged Tiger Woods is unlikely to make an appearance at the Ryder Cup this weekend.
Team USA will battle Team Europe in golf’s annual teams event at Whistling Straits.
However USA captain Steve Stricker revealed on Tuesday that Woods is unlikely to make an appearance after previously flagging that he might.
Woods sustained serious injuries after crashing his SUV on February 23 in the Los Angeles County city of Rancho Palos Verdes.
The 45-year-old is recovering from open fractures to his tibia and fibula, which needed a rod inserted to aid healing, and also foot and ankle injuries that needed screws and pins placed to aid in stabilisation.
“Probably not going to happen,” Stricker said of the possibility of Woods showing up to watch the Ryder Cup.
“He’s been, you know, obviously in my ear a lot and I call him pretty regularly. He’s part of our Ryder Cup team.
“He’s part of what we do. He’s been part of so many of these teams.”
Stricker said some of the American players had visited Woods ahead of the Ryder Cup, but it wasn’t the right time for the 15-time major champion to attend the event.
“I think it’s just not a good time for him to be here physically because of where he’s at in his rehabilitation and tough course to walk,” he said.
“Everybody is going to see it, from tee-to-green, it’s difficult. So probably won’t show up.
“But he’s getting better and his focus and mine is on making a comeback to play again.
“We don’t want to get in the way of that because we would all love to see him come back and play.”
Tiger Woods continuing rehabilitation after car accident
Earlier this month, Stricker said Woods is continuing his rehabilitation from the accident “to get better and try to play golf again”.
“He’s very passionate about (the Ryder Cup). He’s a great guy to talk to. He’s a great guy to lean on. We’ve had a number of talks,” Stricker said.
“He’s a part of this Ryder Cup family; he won’t be able to be a captain’s assistant this time around just because of his ongoing rehabilitation to try to get better and try to play golf again, and that is going well.
“He’s progressing, he’s doing well, things are moving in the right direction.”
The last words from Woods publicly about his recovery came in late May when he said he was focused on “walking on my own.”
He was hospitalised for almost a month after the crash.
Woods played three events in the 2020-21 PGA Tour season, most recently the 2020 Masters that was delayed until November, as he was recovering from back surgery.
The Ryder Cup begins September 24.
KATE, Duchess of Cambridge makes jaws drop after sharing a breathtaking picture from the Lake District
The Duchess of Cambridge spent an active day on land and water in the Lake District in the rugged northwest of England.
As part of her ongoing campaign to showcase the benefits of spending time in nature, Kate kicked off the day by going mountain biking with some air cadets.
The mother of three, 39, “passionately believes that spending time outdoors plays a pivotal role in children and young people’s future health and happiness, building foundations that last over a lifetime by encouraging active exploration and the opportunity to form and strengthen positive relationships,” according to the palace.
When she visited the area in June 2019 with Prince William, Kate told locals that her children love the area and walking in the fells. She also recalled how, when she was growing up, she loved to go boulder hopping in the countless streams that criss-cross the mountainsides.
Tuesday’s visit came as the RAF Air Cadets Windermere Adventure Training Centre was opened following a refit costing around $3 million (£2 million). Kate is the Honorary Air Commandant of the Royal Air Force Cadets. Hundreds of cadets from around the U.K. will use the center during their visits to the spectacular Lake District “to build their confidence and leadership skills” as they work toward achieving their Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Kate’s office at Kensington Palace said.
After her morning with the air cadets, Kate was set to hear more about how the stunning lakeland area also provided healing from one of Europe’s darkest chapters: the aftermath of the Holocaust.
She joined a boat trip with two of the Windermere Children, a group of 300 Holocaust survivors who were brought to stay in the Lake District in 1945 to help them recuperate following the atrocities they experienced in concentration camps and the ghettos of Nazi-occupied Europe.
“She was absolutely delightful,” Ike Alterman, a 93-year-old survivor from Poland who was a prisoner at Auschwitz, Buchenwald and Theresienstadt, told PEOPLE. “We laughed, she asked questions and she wanted to know the answers. We talked about her kids and my kids, and how we love the lakes. I have two girls and two grandchildren. I told her what happened to me during the war and when I arrived and how I progressed in business later.”
He added, “I didn’t know what to expect, but we spoke like a couple of friends. She was so down-to-Earth.”
Arek Hersh, 92, was also joined by the Duchess on the boat. A survivor of Auschwitz, he lost his parents and his brothers and sisters — in total 81 members of his family perished. He settled in Leeds, Yorkshire, and worked as a mechanic and, in later years, as a landlord for students in the city. He is featured in the 2020 film The Windermere Children and the documentary The Windermere Children: In Their Own Words.
“It was very nice. She was very interested,” he told PEOPLE. “It brought back happy memories of being on the lake.”
This group of children were called the ‘Windermere Children’. I wanted to be able to meet some of the survivors Ike & Arek in person to hear their stories; about how they went on to create their own companies, write a book & to this day, still sneak in the odd round of golf.(2/3) pic.twitter.com/XNTimAxZ8K

The Duchess’s office explained she wanted to meet some of those who came to the area at the time and hear how they had been helped to heal from their traumatic experiences by undertaking outdoor recreation, sport and art therapy at the Calgarth Estate nearby.
That poignant part of Kate’s visit to the Lake District very much fit in with both her and the other royals’ desire to engender religious tolerance and understanding, as well as to find imaginative ways to educate about past atrocities.
Last year, Kate highlighted some of the incredible stories of survival amid the Nazi occupation of much of Europe when she photographed Holocaust survivors and their grandchildren.
